![]() We get ours partly from food - sardines, salmon, liver, and eggs are good sources - and partly from the bacteria in our gut. Most animal species can make vitamin B 12, but not humans. Lack of this B 12 causes pernicious anaemia - the body cannot produce enough red blood cells to transport all the oxygen that it needs. For the bodyĬobalt is at the heart of vitamin B 12 where it is directly bonded to a methyl group one of the rare examples of a metal-to-carbon bond in nature. Cobalt catalysts are used in the chemical industry to convert syngas, a mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen, into liquid fuels. Alnico, an alloy of mainly of aluminium, nickel and cobalt, is used for permanent magnets that are very powerful although in small appliances neodymium-based magnets are now mainly used. However, it has the advantage of maintaining its magnetism to much higher temperatures iron demagnetises at 770☌ whereas cobalt's Curie point is at 1130☌. Some cobalt alloys are used in artificial body parts such as knee replacements and in dentistry.Ĭobalt can be magnetised, like iron, although it is less powerful. One alloy of cobalt, chromium, and tungsten is known as Stellite and is used for heavy duty high temperature cutting tools. Certain types of stainless steel contain it, including that used to make razor blades. Today cobalt comes mainly as a by-product of nickel production, and it is used in alloys for magnets, in ceramics, in catalysts and in paints. In 1730, the Swedish chemist Georg Brandt (1694-1768) began to investigate a similar ore found in a copper mine at Vestmanland and showed it was a hitherto unknown metal which he christened cobalt. They referred to the ore by the German name for these evil spirits, kobald (it was in fact smaltite, CoAs 2) and kobald eventually gave rise to the name of the metal itself. When, in the 1500s, silver miners in Saxony tried to smelt what they believed was a silver-bearing ore they were disappointed and cursed the mineral, saying it had been bewitched by goblins. Curiously, this element got its name by being cursed.

You can download third-party apps on both Windows and macOS via the web or the platforms’ respective app storefronts. However, unlike Microsoft Office, iWork is completely free. Microsoft Office is more widely used because there are more Windows machines in the world. Given their similarities, it’s hard to say which OS has better office tools. Where Microsoft Office has Word, Excel and PowerPoint, Apple’s iWork suite has Pages, Numbers and Keynote. Windows and macOS have different names for similar office tools. In the meantime, we’ve got our developer brains in gear and will keep looking for creative solutions to your presentation problems! We have our fingers crossed that Microsoft will open up access to PowerPoint for Mac so we can continue to spread presentation creation joy with epic add-ins. If you’re approaching PowerPoint for Mac with a developer brain, these are some of the major things you need to know: Feature But there are some things that the Mac version of BrightSlide simply can’t do because Microsoft have not opened up access to the interfaces we need under the hood. And we recently released a Quick Access Toolbar – a customised toolbar packed full of our favourite PowerPoint tools – that runs in PowerPoint for Mac. Our free BrightSlide add-in has over fifty new tools to make your presentation creation process faster and more enjoyable. Making PowerPoint do things it doesn’t do out of the box is one of our passions. With all that said, this is what we’ve discovered to be the most significant differences between the latest versions* of PowerPoint for Windows and PowerPoint for Mac: Feature And as Microsoft continue to invest in both desktop platforms, the differences appear to be getting smaller. However, as the saying goes, the only constant in life is change. For example, transparent pictures and hex colour codes were enjoyed by the Mac community long before they finally appeared for PC users – in 20 respectively. On the other hand, there are a few features that Mac users got their hands on ahead of PC users. But that’s another story!) However, some of these features never make it to the Mac at all. Generally, new features first appear in the Windows version of PowerPoint (at least until PowerPoint for the Web was conceived. If you’re using PowerPoint regularly to create masterpieces, you need to know what features are, or are not, supported by each platform. They are the brains behind our free PowerPoint design and productivity add-in BrightSlide and a lot more good stuff! They have also spent a lot of time contemplating (and being frustrated by) what we can do with add-ins in Windows that we can’t on Mac. The second is the ‘developer brain’: this is our add-ins development team! This team spend a lot of time thinking about how we can push PowerPoint far beyond its native capabilities. The first is the ‘user brain’: like many of you, we use PowerPoint every day to create presentations, videos, documents and more. Here at BrightCarbon we have a rather unique perspective on compatibility because we tend to look at PowerPoint with two brains. These days things have improved, but there are still a few key differences between the two desktop platforms of the world’s favourite presentation design software. ![]() There were so many things missing in PowerPoint for Mac compared to the Windows version.
